Translator’s note:

Towards the end of the musical, Dunant quotes the Bible, saying “And the life was the light of man. And the light shines in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it.” (この命は人の光なり、光は闇を照らし、闇はこれを悟らす。) What the Bible actually states is “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” (John 1:4-9, NKJV)

I was wondering if there was a typo in the Le Cinq script, and it should have been 闇はこれを悟らず instead, but the synopsis on the official site also has it as 闇はこれを悟らす. There was a Japanese fan who pointed out the same thing, and they also noted that the same misquoted verse was used in “War and Peace” (also written by Ueda Shinji). Given the context in which it was used there, it appears to be intentional and not a typo.

With everything above in mind, I’ve translated the quote according to the script. So if you’re familiar with the bible and puzzled by the quote, yes, it’s not what’s actually stated in the bible!
